"What is the best way to lose weight?"
I get asked this question almost daily, sometimes more. The short answer, their isn't one. There is not really one way of exercise that is gonna help you lose more weight than another. There are differently techniques that will help GREATLY! But, there is no "best way to lose weight".
My simple best answer would be that the best way is doing physical activity that you will be regular and consistent with. I could tell you that doing 2 hours on the treadmill every other day is the best way to lose weight (which it is not, this is just an example lol), but even if you want to lose weight, you probably won't do it if you hate being on the treadmill like most people. The best way to lose unwanted weight is to get involved in a form of physical activity that you enjoy and do without feeling that it is a chore.
This can be different for every person. Some people, like me, love being in the weight room and pushing weight around, others do enjoy running long distances, some people like sports, yoga, group exercise classes, cycling, etc. If you like a form of physical activity, DO IT! some physical activity is better than none, but you should also understand what you do for physical activity will not always work for certain goals. This meaning that you may love basketball, but if your goal is to gain 20 lbs of muscle, playing basketball alone will not get you there. You can continue to play basketball, but you should work in resistance training and use basketball as your form of cardio!
With all of this being said, there are certain proven ways to lower body fat percentage. First of all, is the understanding that metabolism is determined a lot by muscle mass, which is why human's metabolism slows as we age. So, to combat a loss of muscle and an increase in fat, you should be getting involved in some sort of weight/resistance training. That could be through group exercise classes at your local gym, machines, or the free weight room.
In my opinion, one of the best ways to lose the weight you want and make your phsyque look better would be to mix weight lifting with HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) and the once or twice per week Low Intensity Steady State cardio (LISS) such as walking or jogging on the treadmill, taking your furry friends on a long walk, walk on the beach, etc.
For HIIT, you can turn just about anything into a HIIT workout. IF you want to cycle you could do round of 30 seconds as fast as you can go, 30 seconds of slow pedaling for recovery, that's a version of HIIT. You can also do quick tempo circuit workouts, group exercise HIIT workouts, supersets in the weight room, the opportunities are really endless!
But, no matter what avenue of exercise you decide to pursue, make sure it is consistent, that is probably the most important part. Going to the gym once one week, 5 times next week, twice the week after that is not consistent. Consistent would be Monday, Wednesday, Friday you go to the gym for 45 minutes to an hour every single week (with the very occasional miss or switch in days). 99.9% of the general population should be able to exercise at least 3 times per week, if not more.
